KARACHI: Nazimeen to resign for contesting elections


KARACHI, Aug 17: Governor Mohammedmian Soomro on Saturday promulgated the Sindh Local Government (fifth amendment) Ordinance 2002, providing that district, taluka, town and union council Nazimeen and Naib Nazimeen may contest election after resigning from the existing office.

The new ordinance substitutes section 158 of the Sindh Local Govt Ordinance 2001 with the following:

“Bar against Nazimeen for dual membership: a district Nazim, Naib Nazim, Taluka Nazim, Naib Nazim, Town Nazim, Naib Town Nazim, Union Nazim and Naib Union Nazim may contest election for any other political office after resigning from the existing office; provided that a member of district council, taluka council, town council or union council may contest election for any other political office without resigning from the membership of such council; provided further that such member shall not hold more than one office at a time.”—PPI
