KARACHI, Aug 16: The Pakistan People’s Party and the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leaders on Friday rejected what they termed anti- people and anti-democracy measures taken by the military regime and vowed to maintain close liasion within and outside the parliament to frustrate all such attempts.

This was stated by the PPP sources after its delegation led by its vice-chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim and information secretary Taj Haider had held an hour-long meeting with the MMA president Moulana Shah Ahmed Noorani at his residence.

During the meeting they termed the constitutional package and ordinances issued by the military regime anti-democracy and emphasised the need for retaining the 1973 Constitution intact.

There were, however, no indications that the two sides exchanged views on seat adjustments in the coming elections.

The meeting also focused on the evolving political situation in the country in general and in Karachi in particular. During the meeting they also exchange views on the composition of the future parliament and its advantages to one federating unit in joint sitting, specially when crucial issues like water apportionment were still unresolved.

They were of the view that in order to ensure free and fair elections, it was necessary that all political parties were taken into consideration.

Information secretary of the PPP, Taj Haider, told newsmen that the meeting would have far-reaching implication for national politics.
