ISLAMABAD, Aug 15: The Accountability Court No II Rawalpindi on Thursday convicted Chaudhry Sher Ali, former MNA/Mayor M C Faisalabad to five years rigourous imprisonment with a fine of Rs100 million on charges of accumulation of movable and immovable assets through corruption during his public office tenure.

In case of default, it shall be recovered U/S 386-B CrPC against his property. The accused has also been disqualified from holding any public office or applying for any financial facility from a state-controlled DFI for a period of 10 years.

In a press release issued here the accused was convicted by the same court in another case to 10 years RI with a fine of Rs20 million.

According to investigations Chaudhry Sher Ali belonged to a low-income family and held the office of Mayor Faisalabad M C from November 1983 to January 1985, July 1986 to November 1987 and January 1988 to January 1992.

The accused was elected MNA in 1990 from NA-65 and had second tenure from NA-64 during 1993-97. He accumulated properties/assets worth crores of rupees during the period that time.

These assets were disproportionate to his known sources of income and was a result of his misuse of public office.

Before entering politics, the accused lived in a 300 sq ft house owned by his father Faqir Mohammad, which was allotted to him in the year 1967 at Rs1,800.

The accused and his brother Shoukat Ali co-shared the ownership of this house.

Total cost of assets held by the accused comes to Rs54,39,83,865 against the total income of Rs13,80,166.
