LAHORE, Aug 11: Fancied chestnut mare, Arooj admirably ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman galloped to victory in the feature event run over 900 metres during the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Sunday.
The mare from Live For Others out-of-Julee beat the bay horse Blu’s Wendy by one-and-a-quarter lengths. The bay gelding Might And Power was beaten to third spot, two lengths further back while Half Love managed to complete the frame another six lengths behind. In all, eight ran for the event after the last minute withdrawal of the nine-year-old bay mare Perfect Timing.
This fifth and last event of the class III, IV & V combined turned out a thrilling encounter between Arooj and Blu’s Wendy as both fought stride by stride in which the former emerged victorious.
The victory of Arooj rewarded Shahid Rehman with a grand double when he had earlier rode home fancied chestnut gelding Time Is Gold to a narrow win over blue-roan colt Haseen Love in the second race.
Another jockey, who exhibited a fine display in the saddle was M. Asif (II). He brought in Dancing Margina to win the opener defeating Super Time by a length.
The best performer of the day was the chestnut filly Rukhtas Again, who hacked the field of 16 runners, in the third race. Once this filly from Dexter out-of-Iqtdar was in front she never let her opponents to come near and passed the winning post eight-and-a-half lengths ahead of Royal Prosper.
The stewards scratched the fancied bay filly, Devi Husn Ki from the fourth race after the filly was found unfit to run on examination by club’s vet. Thus the punters were saved from falling in the trap of the filly’s connections, who wanted to run the filly in an unfit condition and make money out of it. A card of five events was gone through. All Races were contested over the sprinting distance of 900 metres.
Meanwhile, the Gymkhana races scheduled for Wednesday will now be held a day earlier (Tuesday). The change in the schedule has been necessitated because of the Independence Day.
