‘No reference against Shahbaz’

Published August 9, 2002

LAHORE, Aug 8: No reference is pending against new PML(N) president Shahbaz Sharif while the earlier references have been filed on court orders.

This was claimed by Advocate Ashtar Ausaf Ali at a press conference here on Thursday.

Mr Ausaf, the former advocate-general of Punjab, had represented the Sharif family in various cases, including those moved in the ehtesab courts.

He said the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had submitted an application with an ehtesab court in Attock four months ago for filing of the two references pending against Mr Sharif on the plea that these were not prosecutable.

He said he had moved an application with the court on Wednesday to get a copy of the court decision on the NAB’s plea.

Moreover, the then president Rafiq Tarar had on an advice of chief executive Gen Pervez Musharraf pardoned the Sharif family for all their ‘mistakes’ and no reference could be filed after that decision, he argued.

He denied that there was any deal between the army government and the Sharif family. However, he did not rule out any deal between the two governments (Pakistan and Saudi Arabia).

He said the family would not move courts on re-opening of references and would rather solve the issue in the political field.
