LANDI KOTAL, Aug 8: Over 50 students who have passed their matriculation examination and their parents have demanded the NWFP governor to increase the number of seats at the Government Degree College here, which would enable the candidates to get admission in the college.

The college has a total of 166 seats for both pre-medical and arts students. All these seats were filled on merit in July last after fulfilling prescribed admission procedure.

Late in July, many students from Khyber Agency whose admission papers were rejected in Peshawar colleges, rushed to Landi Kotal Degree College for late admissions.

The college has not only limited number of seats, but it also is facing shortage of teaching staff. An assistant lecturer in physics has also resigned as he has got a job some where else.

A source at the college told Dawn that unless college was not provided with the required staff, they could not afford to admit more students.

College Principal Prof Sadiq Aslam, in a meeting with the aggrieved students and their parents, clarified that admission to the new classes had already been completed, but if high authorities could increase the number of seats and provide him with additional staff, he would have no objection to accommodating new students.
