SUKKUR, Aug 7: The acting president, Sukkur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Shakeel Ahmed Mukhtar, and its vice president, Mohammed Iqbal Arain, and the director, SITE Board, Khalid Mehmood, in their joint press statement issued on Wednesday said that lower rates of electricity were always being maintained all over the world. But in Pakistan, the utilities’ organizations increased tariffs at their own discretion, which badly affects the investment climate.
They said that due to the constant increase in electricity tariff, the prices of daily-use items increase manifold and become beyond the reach of the common man.
They said the people of the country are already over-burdened due to the price hike and are facing financial constraints.
They said that the overall effects of the increase in electricity tariff was that the prices of commodities increased, and the exports and economy of the country were severely affected.
They said that considering this alarming situation, President Pervez Musharraf intervened in the matter last month and restrained the Wapda from increasing its tariff, but it has now again increased 0.19 paisas in its electricity tariff, which is unjustified and unfair.
They said that the government itself feels difficulties in meeting its export targets.
They appealed to President Pervez Musharraf to issue immediate orders for the withdrawal of the increase in electricity tariff so that the people of the country and its exports would not suffer.
