Ex-official held on corruption charges

By Our Staff Correspondent

MUZAFFARABAD, Aug 6: A former secretary to the Azad Kashmir government, who was demoted and dismissed from service, was arrested by the AJK Ehtesab Bureau on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in corruption.

Syed Mujahid Hussain Naqvi, currently practising law in AJK’s superior courts, was arrested by police near the Supreme Court’s circuit bench in Mirpur, where he had gone to seek bail before arrest. His bail plea was rejected by the High Court earlier.

An Ehtesab Bureau official told Dawn that Mr Naqvi, who was demoted from information secretary to assistant director and later dismissed from service, was arrested under different charges, including corruption and misuse of power.

The main charges, according to the official, were of tampering with service record to get undue promotions, embezzlement in the purchase of five fax machines and obtaining Rs 290,000 from the Zakat profit fund for medical treatment in a foreign country of his mother, who was never taken there. Another charge against him was raising properties incompatible with his known sources of income, the official said.
