PM’s party seeks early polls in Lanka

By Our Correspondent

COLOMBO, Aug 6: Sri Lanka’s ruling United National Front on Monday said it would suggest President Chandrika Kumaratunga to call early elections as, according to the Front, it was now “impossible to carry out further governance” due to “hindrance from the opposition”.

The UNF has over the past two weeks been consistently accusing the People’s Alliance of President Kumaratunga of planning to “overthrow” Prime Minister Wickremesinghe’s government.

LTTE CONCERN: A delegation of Tamil political leaders held talks with the LTTE at the party’s headquarters in Vanni last week.
