Consultations on proposed amendments begin

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Aug 5: President Pervez Musharraf on Monday started consultations with his legal aides to take final decision about the proposed constitutional amendments.

Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada, senior adviser to the Chief Executive, and Attorney-General Makhdoom Ali Khan met the president and gave their points of view on the proposals.

They were reportedly of the view that the Supreme Court’s mandate to the military ruler to amend the Constitution did not authorize him to rewrite it but was only to ensure an orderly running of the government.

The apex court had only permitted the Chief Executive to resort to his power to amend the Constitution only if the Constitution failed to provide a solution for attainment of his declared objectives.
