HYDERABAD, Aug 2: The DSP of Phuleli, Khalid Mustafa Korai, on Thursday staged a high drama on the premises of the civil court to save his driver from being remanded to the judicial custody in a case in which a matriculation student, Saad Abro, was killed when the DSP’s mobile van ran over him on the Qasim Chowk on Wednesday night.

The ASI of Bhitai Nagar investigation police, Shahid Aijaz, produced driver Ayub Lakho in the court of the first extra joint civil judge. Soon, DSP Korai with more than one-dozen-and-a-half uniformed and plain-clothed policemen struck on the court premises. He used abusive language against the ASI and threatened to book him in a drug case.

The DSP then told the driver to send an application to the AIG, mentioning therein that the Bhitai Nagar investigation police had demanded Rs20,000 bribe from him.

The ASI tried to pacify the DSP in a polite way, saying he was only obeying the orders, and had nothing personal against the DSP or his driver.

The DSP, however, continued to hurl abuses against the ASI as well as his immediate boss for attempting to send one of their colleagues to prison in a bailable offence (section 320 of the PPC).

Finally, the DSP appeared in the court and submitted surety papers of a vehicle and got his driver bailed out.

Then the DSP and his entourage left the premises, passing remarks in jubilation.

ASI Shahid went to the DPO, in charge of investigation, Aftab Nizamani, narrated the incident and left his belt and cap with him in protest.

Earlier, the driver was arrested under the orders of the AIG, Hyderabad region police, Abdul Rauf Yousufzai.
