Stuttering start by Montgomerie

STOCKHOLM, Aug 1: Colin Montgomerie made a stuttering start to the defence of his Scandinavian Masters title as he produced an erratic one-under-par 70 to fall six shots behind first round leader Graeme McDowell.

The 39-year-old is seeking his fourth victory in the event, but only managed to slip under par with a double-birdie finish, running up four bogeys to counter his five birdies in all.

On Wednesday Montgomerie had said he was worried that his old left-to-right fade shot was letting him down.

It was that shot that led to a bogey at his first hole, the 10th.

Montgomerie, too, was not pleased with missing so many greens to drop shots.—Reuters
