KARACHI: Muttahida announces party election results

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 1: Chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Altaf Hussain, on Thursday asked the newly elected party office-bearers to keep struggling for the cause of the common people and work for the propagation of the party ideology in every part of the country.

He was addressing the party worker and elected office-bearers from London following the announcement of the results of the intra-party elections held on July 30.

The election committee of the Muttahida announced the results at a press conference here at the party headquarters in Azizabad.

Leading the press conference, Syed Sardar Ahmad, announced the name of office-bearers at different levels, including the central coordination committee.

“About 13000 votes were cast in the central committee elections which was 91 per cent of the total registered votes”, Mr Sardar said.

According to the results, Dr Imran Farooq has been elected as convener of the central committee.

He got 12672 votes and was followed by Aftab Ahmad Shaikh who got 11756 and was declared one of the six deputy conveners of the party.

Other deputy conveners are: Nasreen Jalil (11486 votes), Shaikh Liaquat Hussain (11421), Dr Farooq Sattar (11379), Syed Shoaib Bukhari (11195), Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui (11066). Ten of the central body members are not in the country at present.

Besides the names of conveners and deputy conveners, the election committee also announced the names of those in charge and the members of the Karachi organizing committee and zonal committees in Nawab Shah, Mirpur Khas and Sanghar and the provincial committees of the Punjab and Balochistan.

“The elections of the NWFP committee have been delayed for some days in view of the reports of violations of the election code of the party”, said Mr Sardar Ahmad.

The newly elected members of the central coordination committee are: Tariq Javed, Syed Salimul Haq (Salim Shahzad), Kunwar Naved Advocate, Anis Ahmad Khan Advocate, Dr Ishratul Ibad, Kunwar Khalid Younus, Muhammad Ashfaq, Muhammad Anwar, Mustafa Ali Azizabadi, Ali Ahmad Barohi, Mumtaz Anwar, Syed Zulfiqar Hyder Advocate, Syed Javed Hussain Kazmi, Syed Ahmad Tariq Mir, Muhammad Wasey Jalil, Muhammad Yousuf Khan, Hassan Mussana Alvi and Iftikhar Akbar Rindhawa.

The Karachi organizing committee comprises Kunwar Naved Advocate(In charge), Ismail Qureshi, Liaquat Ali Qureshi, Muhammad Hussain, Faisal Subzwari, Abdul Sattar Ansari, Adil Siddiqui and Syed Manzoor Hasan.

Mr Altaf Hussain congratulated the elected office-bearers and the members of the election committee and others who contributed to the holding of the party elections. He urged the party leaders at different levels to discharge their responsibilities honestly, remain impartial while taking decisions and not to get involved in any sort of nepotism.

“If the elections are held in an impartial and transparent way, the Muttahida’s candidates will reach the parliaments not only from the urban areas, but also from the interior of Sindh”, he said.

He said that the Muttahida had never aimed to win the elections only, but wanted a change in the prevailing system which, he said, was serving the corrupt and had failed to ensure national cohesion and integrity.

He said the party workers should not loose heart due to the treatment given to the Muttahida by the media.

“The attitude of the media towards the party in the whole disgusts the party friends, but it should be kept in mind that we are not seeking publicity and the work pertaining to dissemination of the party’s ideology must continue unhindered”, he said.

“I am not hungry for power, neither do I want to become prime minister or president, but the electronic media should at least maintain certain decorum and manners while presenting programmes on political issues involving the Muttahida Qaumi Movement”, he said.
