KARACHI, Aug 1: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has requested the Sindh government to call a meeting of all stakeholders to chalk out a new distribution formula for the water coming from the Hub dam keeping in view the falling water level in the dam.

The supply of water from the Hub dam resumed on Aug 22 last year when it was filled after monsoon heavy rains in Balochistan, and Karachi started receiving 38 million gallon daily water from there.

Balochistan was then getting about 22mgd, but due to the falling water level in the dam both the KWSB and Balochistan are now receiving 12mgd from that source.

The KWSB has requested the Sindh government to call a meeting to discuss the serious matter.

The KWSB has been devolved to the City District Government Karachi. KWSB managing director Brig Behram Khan resigned, and no other MD or an EDO for the KWSB has been officially notified. — PPI

shortage: Several parts of former district Central did not receive water for the second consecutive day on Thursday due to delay in repairing the 66-inch dia pipeline that developed leakage near Maymar Complex, adds our staff reporter.

Water supply to various localities, including New Karachi, North Karachi, Buffer Zone, Shadman Town, parts of Surjani Town and Federal B-Area, was affected on Wednesday when their supply from the North-East Karachi filter plant was stopped to undertake repair of the 66-inch dia pipeline that started leaking near Maymar Complex.

Supply to the affected areas was initially closed for 12 hours, but the delay in plugging the leakage made the residents of these localities to go without water for more than 24 hours.

According to sources in the KWSB, the repair work of the leaking pipeline has almost been completed and water supply to all the affected areas would resume from Friday morning.

An acute shortage of water has been persisting in Kharadar for more than 15 days.

People residing in multi-storied buildings near Jaffar Fuddo Road and Kharadar’s police kiosk deplored that they had been experiencing an acute shortage of water for more than two weeks, but the officials concerned of the KWSB had not bothered to solve the problem. Their numerous complaints had gone unheeded.

Residents of the locality demanded of the City Nazim and senior officials of the KWSB to order the officials concerned to immediately rectify the fault responsible for water shortage, as in the absence of supply of piped water they had no choice but to drink subsoil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.

TURBID WATER: Lemon-barley coloured turbid water that is being supplied to most parts of the city for the past one month has resulted in an outbreak of diarrhoea and other such diseases.

KWSB officials claim that the turbid water being supplied to various parts of the city do not contain any hazardous elements, but complaints of diarrhoea, dysentery and other intestinal troubles have been pouring in at newspaper offices.

Doctors have already declared the turbid water impure, unhygienic and unfit for human consumption. They say people have been falling sick due to the consumption of the turbid water.

They advised people to ensure proper boiling of the water.

Contaminated water is also reportedly exposing a considerable number of infants to diarrhoea and consequently to severe dehydration.

Due to poor hygienic conditions, the government and private health care units in the city, are receiving a large number of patients, reports say.

Experts stated that water available for drinking purposes to the local public is generally unfit for human consumption.
