SRINAGAR, July 31: Five people, were killed in attacks by militants in Kashmir as shelling between Indian and Pakistani forces on the disputed border left one dead, police said on Wednesday.

A government official, deputy collector Fayaz Ahmed, died when suspected militants opened fire on his car early on Wednesday near the township of Tral, police said.

Two police guards and two civilians were injured in the attack. One of the civilians, an employee in Ahmed’s office, died.

In a separate incident, a policeman was killed and two others wounded in an attack on their post in the village of Khanmoh.

Suspected rebels also shot dead a Muslim student in the southern Rajouri district overnight, police said. The motive was not immediately clear.

In the neighbouring district of Doda, two personnel of India’s border roads organization were injured in a mine explosion, police said.

One person was reported dead and another nine injured as Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire on the Line of Control (LoC), police said.—AFP
