Mountaineer, porter killed

SKARDU, July 27: Capt Mohammad Iqbal of 10 Sindh Regiment died while scaling K-2 in Karakoram Range, sources said here.

Owing to bad weather, Mr Iqbal was returning after scaling up to camp two, when he slipped and fell in a gorge. Captain Iqbal was performing duty as a liaison officer with Pak- China K2 Combined Expedition. The body has been sent to his home.

In another incident, a high altitude porter was killed by avalanche while scaling down the same peak on July 13.

Sher Rehman, 36, resident of Chilas, Diamer district, was climbing with a Spanish expedition team as high altitude porter. He successfully reached on camp two with his other colleagues, but they had to return due to inclement weather. When they reached near camp one, Sher Rehman was buried under an avalanche, while the Spanish mountaineers and the other high altitude porters escaped unhurt.
