KARACHI: City to have eight new colleges

KARACHI, July 26: The buildings of eight new colleges in Ibrahim Hyderi, Korangi, Orangi and New Karachi under the annual development programme have been completed and the institutions would soon start functioning.

In all, work is under way on 150 schemes of schools and colleges in Karachi at an estimated cost of Rs300 million. This was stated at a meeting held here on Friday under the chairmanship of DCO Shafique Rahman Paracha. The meeting reviewed the development schemes in education sector being carried out under ADP.

It was decided that the EDO Education will make arrangements for provision of furniture and the teachers on priority basis so that classes could be started where college buildings have been completed.

After examining other schemes of construction of primary, secondary and technical schools and requirement to complete them without delay, the meeting decided that emphasis be laid on completion with priority to such buildings whose 50 per cent work has been completed. The work would also be expedited on other schemes.

The meeting was informed that buildings of seven primary schools in Gadap town area have been completed while buildings of five secondary schools in Gadap, North Karachi, Gulshan and Gulberg towns also have been completed. Arrangements would be made to start classes in these schools.

Thirteen technical schools are also being established in different towns of the city of which construction of buildings of two schools — one each in Landhi and Murad Memon Goth, has already been completed. The meeting was pointed out that difficulties in posting of teachers are being faced as some of the new schools are located in remote and less-populated areas. It was decided to seek cooperation of community to meet shortage of teachers in such schools.

A committee, headed by EDO Education, was constituted to make functional all such schools whose buildings have been completed.

The committee will meet regularly to review the progress. The NGOs would also be approached for their cooperation.

Meanwhile, the District Coordination Officer (DCO), Karachi, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, took notice of debris and garbage taken out of drains lying on the roads and instructed the officials to make immediate arrangements to remove the same as it was creating inconvenience to citizens and obstructing smooth flow of vehicular traffic.

He stated this while reviewing different development projects undertaken by City District Government Karachi (CDGK) here on Friday.

Later, the DCO inspected dredging of drains, accompanied by EDO Works, Brig. Zaheer Qadri and Saleem Azhar, a representative of City Nazim. He also inspected under construction roads from Banaras Chowk to Abdullah College.

The DCO was given a briefing about construction of the road which would be 3400 feet long with four lanes on each side and an amount of Rs19.6 million is being spent on it.

The DCO decided that while constructing the road, improvement of drainage should also be included in it.

He also took notice of encroachments on both sides of the under construction road and ordered its removal. It was also decided that green-belt be also provided on both sides of the roads.

Later, the DCO convened a meeting at Liaquatabad Town Office.—PPI
