Wasim-Afridi pair in semis


HOUSTON, July 21: Pakistani pair of Wasim Akram and Shahid Afridi and the powerful hitting duo of Wavell Hinds and Ricardo Powell from the West Indies qualified for the semifinals of double wicket tournament at the Reliant Astrodome Stadium Saturday.

Both the pairs won all their three games of the day but not before making shaky starts.

The Pakistani pair, in the first match, defeated the Sri Lankan pair of Kumar Dharmasena and Dulip Liyange by 21 runs. Wasim Akram smashed 31 off 20 balls with two sixes and two boundaries while Afridi clobbered four sixes and two fours off 16 balls but he was dismissed four times — thrice to Dharmasena.

In the third match, Wasim and Afridi defeated the local pair of Faud Bacchus and Amjad Khan by 26 runs. Afridi blasted 53 off 21 balls with five sixes and four boundaries whereas Wasim hammered two sixes and four fours in his 16-ball knock of 34.
