MIRPURKHAS: Farmers demand water share

MIRPURKHAS, July 21: The growers continued protest in Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Digri, Samaro and Umerkot on Saturday against water shortage in their area despite increased water supply at the Mithrao and Jamrao canals.

Hundreds of growers and landlords, including elected representatives, staged a protest demonstration in Kot Ghulam Mohammad town, demanding due share of water for their lands.

Carrying banners and placards, they raised slogans against irrigation officials.

They alleged that the SDOs concerned had sold out their share of water by taking bribe and added that distributaries of their area were lying closed due to the so-called rotation programme.

They warned that the affected growers would open their distributaries to save their standing crops.

They said water flow had improved at the main canals but the irrigation officials were still continuing the rotation programme.

Similar rallies were also staged in Digri, Samaro and Umerkot.

Meanwhile, water theft case were registered against four landlords by the Khan police for stealing water here on Saturday.

Irrigation inspector, Manzoor Hussain Shah, registered lodged the FIR, alleging that Muzammil Leghari, Ghulam Nabi Brohi, Hayat Pathan and Ameer Bukhsh Kapri were involved in water theft by tampering with watercourse 107/2L.

ppp: The Pakistan Peoples Party, Mirpurkhas, has condemned the conviction of Benazir Bhutto, the constitutional package, and the amendment in political parties act.

All this was done at a meeting of the PPP, Mirpurkhas District, which was chaired by its president, Haji Noor Hassan Chandio, on Tuesday.

Its divisional president, Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani, was also present.

The meeting expressed confidence in the leadership of Benazir Bhutto.
