KARACHI: City Council slams KESC for poor performance
KARACHI, July 20: Members of City Council on last day of current session severely criticized the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation for its poor performance, unfriendly attitude towards its customers and continuous hike in tariff rates.
Four resolutions pertaining to different matters of the city were also approved.
House commenced its discussion on a question raised by Bilal Sabir of Saddar Town who had questioned the status of a move initiated by defunct KMC regarding charging some amount from KESC for utilization of municipal lands for installing poles and transformers .
A number of speakers spoke on the issue who slammed KESC for their self-ruling style and having no consideration for the masses. Shenaz Akhter from Shah Faisal Town and Imran Bhagpati said that electricity charges in Karachi are more than anywhere in the country.
Convener Naib Naizm referred the question to council section to be prepared in the form of a draft resolution, while the resolutions approved included one presented by Nasir Daud Durrani expressing gratitude for Corps -5 for developing a public park at old Subzimandi ground and a similar resolution presented by Mangla Sharma and Shenaz Akhter paid tribute to the eminent scientists who developed Ghori, Shaheen and Ghaznavi missiles .
House also approved two resolutions presented by Shazia Bano and Sheikh Muhammad Fayyaz denouncing the transporters who allow male commuters to enter female sections in buses and mini-buses, besides playing indecent songs at high volume.
A number of speakers participated in the discussion and said that both the points are illegal but traffic police have failed to take action against such transporters.
Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan apprised the house about his meeting with Capital City Police Officer Asad Jehangir. He said CCPO had all the details and background based upon which FIR was lodged against Nazim of UC Akhter Colony .
Responding to queries presented by members from Baldia town, Malir towns and Gadap town regarding deplorable condition of bridges in Karachi, Tariq Hasan spoke about his recent visit to a number of bridges including the ICI bridge, Shershah bridge, Moach Goth bridge Hub river road and the Malir bridge.
He said that the Works & Services department is repairing all these important bridges, whereas desilting work at major stormwater drains is also under way.
Naib Nazim announced the names of members of a house committee formed to look into the rehabilitation of the affected people of Lyari expressway. The committee will hold its first meeting on Monday.—PPI
BREAKDOWNS: The Karachi Electric Supply Corporation failed to supply uninterrupted electricity to its consumers on Saturday, adds our staff reporter.
A resident of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Block 11, told Dawn he had a power failure every morning at least for two to three times.
A resident of North Nazimabad, Block J, phoned Dawn to complain against a power breakdown as a result of tripping in a high-tension wire.
Sohail, calling from North Nazimabad, Block A, said his locality had been without electricity since 11am. “Day before yesterday, our locality remained without power supply for seven hours. When I called ‘118’, telephone attendants at first avoided giving a direct answer. Then they said that repaired work was in progress. This is their standard answer whenever I call them up to lodge a power complaint.”
A resident of Federal B Area, Block 19, said he had had to endure a power cut from 2pm to 5.30pm. Another resident of Federal B Area, Block 12, said his locality had been without power the previous day for several hours.
