KARACHI, July 18: The City government has decided to hand over the building of Civic Centre-III in Korangi to the Federal Government for the establishment of an IT university.

The City government is spending an additional Rs30 million to make the building fulfil the requirement for the proposed university.

The Works Department of the City government has prepared a plan to meet the needs of classes, seminar and workshop halls, laboratories and offices for the planned university.

To brief the district coordination officer, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, on the project, a review meeting was held in the Civic Centre-III building.

The meeting was attended by EDO for Works Brig Zahir Qadri, EDO for IT Mohammed Yahya Waliullah and representative of the Karachi Nazim, Saleem Azhar.

The DCO underlined the need for speedy completion of the project and said it should be finalized keeping in view the requirements of IT education and training.

He went round the rooms constructed at each floor of the building and took necessary decisions for the conversion of these rooms to meet the requirement of IT education in consultation with IT experts and engineers present on the occasion.

He noted the problems being caused by the columns in certain rooms and it was decided that the conversion work of such rooms would be carried out with the consultation of the officials concerned of the federal government so that it might not face any construction problem at the time of shifting to this building.

The DCO expressed the hope that with the establishment of the IT university the education in information technology would get a big boost.

The meeting was told that it was in line with the directive of the Nazim of Karachi that ample opportunities of imparting higher education in low income areas be provided.

The meeting decided that the existing environmental conditions around the building would be improved and the City government and Town concerned would take joint measures in this regard. — APP
