KARACHI, July 18: City Council session was hit on Wednesday by uproar from members belonging to the Al-Khidmat and Al-Khadim groups.

The session commenced with objections raised by Razzaq Sanghani, regarding continued absence of Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan from the city. He expressed doubts about Nazim’s frequent foreign visits.

Leader of the majority group, Muslim Pervez, gave a harsh reply to Sanghani’s remarks. This led to an exchange of allegations from both sides. However upon a stern warning from Tariq Hasan, the issue was resolved.

Microphone was given to women members and Shamim Mumtaz Wasi urged the Ombudsman to take suo moto action against failure of the police to check rising incidents of crime against women.

She said that the Nazim Karachi had sympathised with the unfortunate victims of rape in Ranchore Lines, but he too could not do anything against the culprits, who are roaming freely.

Shabana Bano raised a point of order and said that the entire house was drinking contaminated water and during a recent cleaning of over-head water tank, carcass of rats and cats were found in it.

Convener of the house Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan referred the case to the EDO Health and asked him to submit him a report.

Siddique Rathore asked the convener about his scheduled meeting with City Police Chief Asad Jehangir. On this, Tariq Hasan said that Asad Jehangir had requested for queries so that he can obtain information from the concerned department.

After the reply, the house started the proceedings as per agenda where the first proposal was presented by Faizanullah, asking for three secretaries instead of one for UC Nazims while most of these secretaries are grade-4 employees and there should be Grade-16 officers.—PPI
