Surrey suffer shock defeat


LONDON, July 14: Surrey suffered a stunning 26 runs defeat against Warwickshire on the last day of the four-day English county championship match at The Oval.

South African Shaun Pollock captured four wickets for 44 runs as Surrey were dismissed for 137 while chasing 163 runs for victory. Surrey, who had scored 475 in their first innings, had forced Warwickshire to follow-on when they dismissed them for 293 and then restricted to 350.

Results on the final day:

DIVISION ONE

At Leicester: Match drawn. Hampshire 311 (N.Pothas 63, J.Crawley 60) and 283 (R.Smith 104, J.Francis 82; D.Maddy 4-37). Leicestershire 300-9 declared (N.Burns 101, M.Bevan 62) and 72-4. Hampshire 10 points, Leicestershire 10.

At The Oval: Warwickshire beat Surrey by 26 runs. Surrey 475 (M.Ramprakash 210 not out, R.Clarke 79, A.Hollioake 56; D.Brown 7-110) and 137 (A.Hollioake 52; S.Pollock 4-44). Warwickshire 293 (N.Smith 74, S.Pollock 50; J.Ormond 5-116, Saqlain Mushtaq 4-97) and 350 (M.Powell 95, J.Troughton 94; J.Ormond 5-62). Warwickshire 17 points, Surrey eight.

At Hove: Match drawn. Sussex 145 (A.Khan 6-56) and 450 (M.Goodwin 135, T.Ambrose 124, K.Innes 56, M.Prior 53). Kent 349 (E.Smith 141 not out, A.Khan 58) and 85-5. Sussex seven points, Kent 10.

At Scarborough: Match drawn. Somerset 498-9 declared (P.Bowler 84, K.Dutch 74, P.Holloway 65, R.Turner 63, K.Parsons 59; R.Dawson 4-154). Yorkshire 323 (D.Lehmann 64, M.Lumb 57, V.Craven 51; I.Blackwell 4-49, M.Bulbeck 4-94) and 213-5 (D.Lehmann 75). Yorkshire nine points, Somerset 11.

DIVISION TWO

At Southend: Worcestershire beat Essex by eight wickets. Essex 197 (G.Batty 6-71) and 257 (M.Pettini 58, A.Cowan 53). Worcestershire 373 (A.Singh 124, V.Solanki 56, S.Rhodes 56) and 82-2. Worcestershire 19 points, Essex 3.

At Southgate: Middlesex beat Gloucestershire by five wickets. Gloucestershire 388 (K.Barnett 182 not out) and 152-2 declared (T.Hancock 63 not out). Middlesex 301-9 declared (A.Strauss 82, S.Koenig 59; I.Fisher 5-87) and 241-5 (M.Laraman 82 not out, O.Shah 63). Middlesex 18 points, Gloucestershire 7.
