KARACHI: KWSB asks residents to bear gutter line’s repair cost
By Our Staff Reporter
KARACHI, July 13: Filthy water gushing out from a sunken sewerage line has spread over a major portion of the road passing between Sindh Government Press and Old Sabzimandi, inconveniencing pedestrians and motorists going to and from PIB Colony.
But the KWSB is, reportedly, rubbing salt on the wounds of area residents. The sewerage line has sank due to movement of heavy trucks, but the officials concerned of the KWSB have warned the residents of a nearby huge apartment building, Karachi Centre (having over 600 flats), to get the sunken sewerage line repaired at their own expense otherwise the sewerage line of the apartment building will be disconnected.
People residing in the apartment building argued that why should they be punished as more than 60 per cent of them had already cleared their sewerage tax.
Residents of Federal B-Area’s Block 2 (Husainabad) complained that dirty water coming out from choked up gutters had created a stinking atmosphere in their locality, but the officials concerned of the KWSB had not bothered to clear the choked up gutters, though they had lodged numerous complaints with them.
A resident of Husainabad’s House No 74/2 told Dawn that the filthy environment prevailing in his locality for the past two months was posing serious health hazards to those residing in the area.
Expressing concern over the disconnection of water supply to the city government’s Kashmir Complex and the KDA’s Officers’ Club by the KWSB’s tax department on account of outstanding water dues, city government officials said it was amazing to note that the KWSB, in spite of being part of the city government, was disconnecting water connections of recreation places of its own parent organization. They had not been issuing water and sewerage bills to the private management of a number of marriage halls and other halls since 1989, although these marriage halls were situated on KWSB’s land, including the one next to its head office on Sharea Faisal near Awami Markaz, they added.
