PESHAWAR, July 12: The Peshawar High Court Bar Association on Friday endorsed the strike call given by the All Pakistan Lawyers Representatives Conference for July 15.

A decision in this respect was taken at a general body meeting of the association, presided over by its vice-president Shahabuddin Burq. The strike is being observed against the proposed constitutional amendment package and the imposition of general sales tax and professional tax on lawyers.

The meeting was addressed by Barrister Baachaa, Shahabuddin Burq, Saeed Baig and others. They stated the proposed amendments were aimed at introducing presidential form of government in which the parliament would be made subservient to a single individual.

They said the entire package had been drafted to enhance powers of the military ruler and to curtail powers of the parliamentarians.

The participants regretted that different conditionalities had been introduced to keep the mainstream political parties out of politics.
