KARACHI: JSM rejects proposed changes to constitution

KARACHI, July 8: The Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM) has said the present government plans to impose a unitary form of presidential system in the country under the guise of new constitutional reforms.
Rejecting the new constitutional reforms package of the government, the JSM’s central committee at a resolution said the idea behind the reforms was to pave the way for dictatorship.
The resolution noted with concern that “the rulers are usurping people’s democratic rights, human rights and restricting economic and political rights of oppressed nations to achieve their objectives.”
The JSM’s policy-making body, which met here under the chairmanship of Abdul Khaliq Junejo, discussed the fast-changing political scenario in the country in the backdrop of the new constitutional package.
A political resolution adopted in the meeting said the 1973 Constitution had already been disfigured by Gen Ziaul Haq and “now the present rulers have defaced it completely.”
It said the new package was, in fact, a new constitution as under it all powers would be vested in Gen Musharraf and the army would directly rule the country.
The resolution stated that “the idea of National Security Council is nothing but to hoodwink the people as it will implement the decisions of the GHQ.”
It observed that this system would be in no way to be called democratic as the parliament elected by people’s vote and the prime minister would be subservient to one man.
The resolution also noted that the new package offered nothing to oppressed nations as far as distribution of economic resources was concerned.
The meeting warned the people of Sindh not to be misled by agents of the rulers who, it said, were out to deceive them.
The JSM has also decided to launch a mass mobilisation campaign to create awareness among the people by exposing the sinister designs of these elements.
In this regard, the party has formed several committees, comprising people from different walks of life.
