SHIKARPUR, July 7: The tail-end growers of Sindh Canal staged a protest demonstration and blocked the National Highway at Sindh Wah Bridge here on Saturday against the ‘artificial’ shortage of water which, they said, was created by the irrigation authorities.
The protesters were led by Nawaz Ali Khan Kalhoro, Muhammad Moosa Sundrani and Karimdad Brohi.
The protesters dispersed on the intervention by the Zila Nazim, Muhammad Arif Mehar, who assured them of help and cooperation to sort out the matter.
The leaders told the Nazim that the gates at 269 regulator of the Canal had been closed to stop flow of water into Mongar Wah, Mirwah and other waterways because the abadgars did not oblige the irrigation officials by paying illegal gratification.
PROCESSION: A procession was taken out under the aegis of the All Pakistan Clerks Association here on Saturday in protest against sending employees in a large number to the surplus pool.
The protesters urged the government to accept their charter of demands.
They started their march from the office of the DEO (elementary) and converged at the local press club where the leaders delivered speeches.
STRIKE: All the markets and trade centres in Garhi Yasin town remained closed on Sunday in response to a strike call, given by the local chapter of the Shehri Ittehad in protest against the murder of a landlord, Allah Dino Durrani.
