PESHAWAR, July 6: Irum Khannum established a new triple jump record on the opening day of the two-day National Athletics Championships at the Qayyum Sports Complex Friday.
Irum of Pakistan Police recorded a distance of 10.96 metres, breaking the previous record of 10.73.
Irum later collected her second gold of the day when he sprinted to victory in the 100 metres dash, crossing the line in 11.84 seconds.
Local girl Shabana Khattak brought smiles on the faces of home supporters when she equalled the national record in the 100 metres hurdles. She clocked 14.86 seconds while Army’s Fozia Aurangzeb finished second in 15.52 seconds and followed up by Noshin Perveen of Wapda in 15.63 seconds.
In the men’s events, Wapda’s Javed Iqbal created a new national record of 4.87 metres in the pole vault.
