PESHAWAR, July 4: The city police have finalised a plan to ward off any untoward incident of terrorism in the provincial metropolis, sources in the police department told Dawn here on Wednesday.

The country-wide drive against Al Qaeda has put pressure on the provincial security apparatus to prepare itself for any possible act of sabotage.

A special meeting to finalize the security measure was held at the Police Headquarters, which was presided over by Chief of the City Capital Police DIG Khurshid Alam Khan. The meeting was attended by more than hundred senior police officials, the sources said and added that the meeting was convened in view of the recent terrorism incidents in other parts of the country.

The DIG exhorted all the police officials to keep a vigilant eye on suspects and arrest them immediately to thwart any act of terrorism in the city, they said.

For that purpose, he told the meeting, the police must take the local people into confidence as without the public cooperation and support the police might fail to achieve their goals.

The DIG also directed the participating police officers to beef up security around the churches and other places where the saboteurs could target the innocent people.

Khurshid Alam Khan said the city could be the next target of the terrorists after Karachi.

Admonishing all the city SHOs for not registering FIRs to hide the crime ratio in their respective jurisdictions, the DIG told them to act upon the complaints forthwith.

He warned the SHOs that they would be sacked if he (the DIG) received any public complaints about FIRs not being registered.
