KARACHI: Criminal shoots constable to death

KARACHI, July 2: A policeman was shot dead and a wanted man injured in an encounter with police off Super Highway on Tuesday evening.

A police picket posted at Chakar Eating House off Super Highway, in the limits of Gulzar-i-Hijri police station, noticed a wanted man, Darveza, an Afghan national, heading towards Super Highway.

As the police picket comprising four officials signalled them to stop, they fired at the policemen, Gadap Town police officer, Iqbal Dara, said.

The fire was returned and an encounter took place. As a result, Darveza suffered a bullet wound in his leg. The police arrested him and his accomplice Ajmal. His three other accomplices fled.

During the encounter, police constable Nasir Saeed, 35, also suffered a fatal bullet wound in his abdomen.

He was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Iqbal Dara added.
