KARACHI, July 1: The chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party (Shaheed Bhutto), Ghinwa Bhutto, has said that no government can last long through amendments in the constitution and ordinances without the support of the people and their participation in the affairs of the state.

“As soon as this fact is realized by the rulers, the country can be put on the road to sovereignty, prosperity, national integration, survival and durability,” she added.

Ghinwa Bhutto, also the chief of Pakistan National Conference, while addressing the provincial office bearers of the party and delegations at 70-Clifton, on Sunday, asked the party workers to create political awakening and consciousness among the people as the party was destined to play an important role in the coming elections.

She also exchanged views with party officials on the affairs of the party organization and strategy for selection of candidates for the elections.

JI: The chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, has said that conditions and restrictions imposed by the Pervez Musharraf government on participants of the upcoming elections are contrary to the constitution and fundamental rights.

He pointed out that articles 62 and 63 of the constitution pertain to eligibility of the candidate and need to be implemented by restoration of the constitution.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad, while addressing an important gathering of Nazims of every level in Karachi, said that the October elections would be very important and are the only way out for the present rulers. “Therefore, no such step should be taken which could provide an excuse to the rulers to back out from the elections,” he added.

He said that the October elections were the compulsion of Gen Pervez Musharraf’s government which was afraid of the outcome. By imposing whimsical conditions and carrying out amendment in the constitution, the rulers want to elect people of their own choice, he added.

The JI chief also said that the rulers wanted to supersede the Parliament by National Security Council and give more powers to the president than the prime minister, which is against the federal parliamentary system in the country.

He said that a conspiracy was being hatched to confront people with the army which was being projected as a stooge of the US and which was not in the interest of either the country, nation or the army.
