MITHI, June 17: The elected representatives of union councils, Jorou and Posarko, Mithi Tehsil, have urged the Hesco to complete the work on the electrification of villages pending for the last 18 years.

Talking to newsmen here the other day, Ghulam Mustafa, Nazim of UC Jorou, Ram Singh, Nazim of US Pabuher, councillors and elite of the area said that the work on the electrification of Posarko, Dharar, Bevato, Rohiro, Hilario, Pabuher, Mokhar and Kaak had been started in 1984-85 following approval by the government. They said that poles had been installed in seven-kilometre area but further work had been stopped abruptly.

They said that the villages have been denied power despite approval of the scheme. In this regard, they added, the UC of Mithi and the DC of Tharparkar, had already adopted resolutions and the concerned DCO had been directed to include the scheme in the Khushhal Pakistan Programme phase-III and release funds.

They urged the Hesco authorities to complete the work on Posarko Feeder at the earliest.

STUDY: An NGO, the Tharparkar Rural Development Programme sent an eight-member team to Mithi recently to conduct a study regarding the advantages and disadvantages for the people of Thar owing to tapping and exploration of coal deposits.

At an informal meeting held on Friday, the head of the team, Prof Rajab Ali Memon pointed out that they were going to collect data from at least 43 villages, which had a population of 64,000, to ascertain as to how they were living and to what extent their environment would be affected due to the mining of coal.

Prof Rajab said that the coal-mining company\companies would use the latest technology which was not likely to cause displacement of the villagers living near the coal mines.
