NWFP to hold local body polls in 8 districts

NOWSHERA, June 16: The NWFP government is planning to shortly hold town councils elections in eight districts having one Tehsil each, sources said on Sunday.

The provincial governor, Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah, has already given approval to the holding of these elections in 23 town councils of eight districts, having one Tehsil each, the sources said, adding that the process would be completed in two phases.

The notification to this effect is expected in the next 48 hours as all the arrangements have been finalized to hold the elections, the sources revealed.

The elections would be held in two town councils each in Tank, Lakki Marwat, Bannu and Buner districts, four in Kohat district, three each in Abbottabad and Hangu districts and five town councils in Nowshera district.

According to the summary approved by the governor, in the first phase, union councils Naib Nazimeen, who are the members of the town councils in accordance with the law, would form a town council for three months, after which the Election Commission would hold proper elections, in which all councillors, Naib Naizmeen and Nazimeen would elect a new town council.
