KARACHI: Bridges over Lyari river in bad shape

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, June 16: Bridges built on the Lyari Riverbed are in a dilapidated condition due to the negligence of authorities, a visit to the site shows.

For years, no maintenance work has been carried out and as a result, the condition of these bridges is worsening by the day.

There are three bridges over the Lyari riverbed which were constructed several years back by the defunct KMC, and are now under the control of the City Government.

The bridges are Shershah Bridge, Mewa Shah Bridge and Old Dhobighat Bridge and are situated in SITE Town. The two bridges are the nomenclature of the centuries-old Mororo and Mewa Shah graveyards.

These bridges play a link role between Lyari Town and SITE Town. Hundreds of people cross these bridges daily to visit the Towns of Lyari and SITE.

Residents say that the development agencies concerned have never paid any attention to the fast-deteriorating condition of these bridges.

A survey conducted by the engineering department of Lyari Town shows that these bridges badly need renovation work, including repair of railings, carpeting, plastering and installation of street lights.

According to the survey, 65 street lights of 250V need to be fixed along with other accessories along the adjoining Mirza Adam Khan Road.

The report has been submitted to the City Government for urgent action.

EXPRESSWAY: Meanwhile, a visit to the Lyari Expressway project site shows that transporters have re-occupied the site which was cleared of encroachments a few months back.

A number of vehicles including trucks, buses and coaches were seen parked there.

It could not be known whether the transporters had been given parking facility by the authorities or that they were using it without authorization.

The Lyari Expressway project, to be built on the banks of the Lyari riverbed, was inaugurated by the President last April.

Work on the project was halted due to a controversy between the residents and the National Highway Authority over the master plan.
