Brawl leaves one dead
LONDON, June 8: Drunken brawls between English supporters celebrating their team’s World Cup victory over arch-rival Argentina left one person dead while at least 10 people were arrested, police said Saturday.
One man was stabbed during a fight in a pub in the village of Corby in central England on Friday and later died of his injuries, they said. Two youths were being questioned by police Saturday over the incident.
Youths also clashed with police in the northeastern towns of Hull and Grimsby, where pubs were filled to overflowing and drunken football fans hurled bottles after England’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in Japan Friday.
“The public ignored police warnings to control themselves and drunken yobs caused difficulties in both Hull and Grimsby,” said Inspector Steve Page of Humberside police.
At least eight people were arrested in the two towns.
In London, former England star Paul Gascoigne was mobbed by revellers.
“They were hugging and kissing him and throwing beer all over him. He lifted up his shirt to show the fans his belly. Everyone wanted to touch him,” said one onlooker
In Lagos, a fan of Nigeria’s Super Eagles collapsed and died after watching his team crash out, newspapers reported Saturday.
The middle-aged fan died at a television-viewing centre in Lafia, capital of central Nassarawa State, The Guardian reported, quoting state-run News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
All attempts to revive the man, whose identity is not known, failed and doctors later certified him dead.
Local police in Lafia said they have not yet been officially informed of the man’s death.—AFP
