GUJRANWALA, June 8: An education department employee drowned on Saturday in the Upper Chenab Canal while his wife committed suicide on hearing the news of the death of her spouse.

Yousaf Masih was an employee of the Government Girls City College and had been suspended from service some few days ago. He went to the Upper Chenab Canal with his friends to beat the heat. He jumped into the canal and drowned.

When the news reached his wife Nasreen, she reportedly committed suicide by taking poisonous pills.

Divers were searching for the body till the filing of this report.

SALARIES FORFEITED: An additional district and sessions judge ordered on Saturday forfeiture of the salaries of the entire staff of the Wahando police station.

The judge had summoned Dr Arshad Hamid, ASI Yaqoob and Patwari Liaquat Ali to testify in a murder case. Wahando police failed to comply with the court order and none of the witnesses appeared before the court.

Judge Jamshed Husain took serious note of the inefficiency of police officials and ordered the SSP and the district account officer that the salaries of the entire staff of the Wahando police station, including the SHO, should be forfeited.

The court adjourned the hearing of the case till June 14.

REMANDED: An anti-corruption court on Saturday remanded a deputy district attorney in police custody for seven days in a corruption case.

Deputy District Attorney Suleman Jaffar had received Rs25,000 bribe from an ASI and two constables for helping them in an embezzlement case. He could not help them. He returned Rs20,000 when they demanded their money back but denied to pay the remaining amount.

They policemen moved the sessions court. The judge ordered registration of a corruption case against the attorney and got him handcuffed on Thursday.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Students should acquire latest knowledge in the age of information technology.

This was stated by Allama Iqbal Open University Regional Director Prof Tariq Kamal Bhatti while inaugurating the study centre for spring semester at Jinnah Library on Saturday.

He said the students could play a vital role in the development of the country by acquiring professional education.
