KARACHI, June 7: A lack of coordination between different public-sector health departments create difficulties for patients.

This was stated by Dr Yasmin Rashid at a meeting on Friday at the Pakistan Medical Association where a film was screened on health care. She regretted that lack of coherence in approach and attitude at all levels was causing chaos and disillusionment. According to her, the situation could be witnessed in the health sector where several vertical projects have been initiated by the government yet none could be seen conscious about one another.

“Since there is a lack of organization hence we witness that our institutions and departments are suffering from managerial problems,” she said.

As president of PMA-Centre, the speaker said the association being conscious of its responsibility towards society was attempting to create basic civic sense among the citizens.

While the government needs to realize its responsibilities regarding provision for potable water, clean environment, free health care service and education, the PMA is committed to help sensitize the masses how to maintain them, she said.

With regard to the film shown at the meeting, she said it was part of PMA efforts to create awareness, adding that it was not aimed to criticize the government but to get across the actual picture as acknowledgement of faults helps to correct the same.

The documentary film screened on the occasion was an effort of Amar Mehboob Tipu who efficiently portrayed wide range of environmentally hazardous situations leading to a surge in all sorts of ailments without any proper provision for redressal.

The plight of people going to government-controlled health care centres was also depicted in the film and recommendations were forwarded to address the same.

Propositions included provision for free-of-cost basic and emergency medical care at all public health care centres and modification in health care system on a scientific basis enabling the marginalized to benefit.

Fahim Zaman, a former administrator of defunct KMC, said that despite availability of infrastructure and resources, projects related to incinerators and sewerage plants for the city could not be efficiently materialized as there existed no coordination among different agencies.—APP
