KARACHI, June 6: Reckless driving claimed two lives in the city on Thursday and Wednesday.

An unidentified cyclist, who was in his mid-20s, was knocked down by a long truck (JA-2155) on Mirza Adam Khan Road in Chakiwara. He was rushed to Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival, the police said.

The driver escaped after the accident.

A young motorcyclist died in a road accident near Merewether Tower on late Wednesday night.

The police said that Saqlan, aged 16, who was driving a motorcycle, was knocked down by a speeding Ilyas coach (PE-2412) near Merewether Tower. He was rushed to Civil Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The police claimed to have arrested the coach driver, identified as Iftikhar, and impounded the coach.

CARJACKING: Thirty-one vehicles — 18 cars and 13 motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Thursday, the police said.

Eight cars were hijacked. Ten others were stolen.

Four motorcycles were hijacked. Nine others were stolen.

The police also claimed on Thursday to have recovered two cars and seven motorcycles in the city.

WOUNDED: Car hijackers shot and wounded two men in the city on Thursday.

The police said that Mohammed Arif, aged 32, was intercepted by two armed men in Muslimabad near Islamia College and demanded the car keys. As Arif tried to put up resistance, the armed men opened fire on him and escaped. Arif had been admitted to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre. Sources at the hospital said that the man was out of danger.

Car hijackers shot and wounded Asghar Ali, aged 60, in Federal B-Area.

The police said that Asghar had come to Water Pump to buy some articles.

As he stopped his car (AB-5257) at Water Pump in Federal B-Area’s Block-16, three armed men, who were following him in another car, asked for the car keys.

As he put up resistance to the bandits, they opened fire on him and got away with the car. He had been admitted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was stated to be in stable condition, the police said.

ROBBERIES: Four robberies were committed in the city on Thursday, the police said.

Four armed men barged into a house in Liaquatabad and got away with Rs50,000 and several hundred US dollars.

The police said that the house belonged to a Dubai-based businessman, Abid, whose family was not at home at the time of the robbery.

Mohammed Yusuf lodged a report at Shahrah-i-Noorjehan police station that three armed men barged into his shop and took away valuables.

Bandits entered the house of Ashrafullah in Gulshan-i-Iqbal and got away with valuables.

Armed men looted cash from Mohammed Naeem in Samanabad.
