Jockey Nasir steals show with brace of winners

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, May 27: Jockey M. Nasir stole the riding limelight with a brace of winners, at the Summer Gymkhana Meeting held at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday afternoon. The young rider registered his first win of the day in the second event when he piloted Sajan Black to a thrilling victory over Cosby Kid and the favourite Always In.

His second victory was in the fourth event astride Ever Shine completing a hat trick of wins who just managed to hold off the belated challenge of Donatello after snatching the lead at the four furlong post.

In this race, Ali Faisal Farooq’s bay colt Hiawatha, installed as the favourite, finished third, two lengths behind Donatello, after lying second turning into the home straight.

Also sharing in the celebrations were owner Shoukat Awan and veteran trainer Taj Mohammad, who saddled both the winners.

The seven-year-old bay mare Kiev, ridden by jockey Ahmed won the opening race by four-and-a-half lengths from Much Better, chasing the winner throughout the race, after Baby Tabassum took a flying start but was soon overtaken by a bunch of runners.

In the third race, Syed Ali Gohar Shah’s bay colt Royal Lancer beat Lover’s Line by a comfortable margin of four lengths. Walking Distance, sprinting in from behind, won the fifth race by just 3/4 of a length.

Promising riding boy Kashif Ali, took over the reins from M. Faiz on Walking Distance, just before the race could begin.
