KARACHI, May 23: Water supply position to various parts of the city is getting worst with each passing day, adding to the miseries of people living in the water-starved localities in the current hot and humid season.
The worst affected areas include Nazimabad Nos 1, 4 and 7, Paposhnagar, North Karachi’s Sector 11-C-1 (Sir Syed Town), North Nazimabad’s Block ‘D’, Bangalore Town, Al-Hamra Society, Adamjee Nagar, parts of Dhoraji Colony, Bahadurabad Block 3, Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 10 and 10-A and a major portion of Malir, Khokarapar and Federal B Area’s blocks 2, 8 and 15.
At a time when more and more localities have begun experiencing an acute water shortage, various parts of the city, including North Karachi’s Sector 11-C-1, Orangi’s Sector 11-1/2, Bangalore Town and Lyari’s deficient pockets, have been in the grip of a water crisis for the last one week.
Residents of localities which are either receiving scant supply or have been without water for the last one week complained that although they had lodged a number of complaints with the officials of the KWSB, none of them have, so far, taken measures to restore the normal supply to their localities.
They deplored that, on the one hand, the KWSB officials had failed to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted supply to their localities for weeks together and, on the other, the taxation department of the KWSB did not give them any relief in their water bills for the period their taps remained dry. They said they had to spend a considerable amount of money on buying water from private tankers whenever water supply to their localities remained suspended.
They demanded of the city Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, to direct the KWSB officials to immediately ensure a smooth supply to their localities as purchasing private tanker water was putting extra financial burden on them.
