KARACHI: Lyari Town seeks bus stands removal

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 23: The administration of Lyari Town has urged the City Government to take appropriate measures for shifting and providing an alternative terminus site to inter-provincial vehicles.

It said the goods transporters and Balochistan coaches and buses operating on the main roads of the town were the constant source of public concern as they blocked roads and created a public nuisance.

These transporters had set up illegal and self-created bus and coach stands and occupied the roads by fixing booking tables and doing their business on the main roads.

In a communication to the City Nazim, it said: “Shifting and allocating site for inter-provincial vehicles is the responsibility of the City District Government.”

It recalled that the CDGK had already allocated sufficient space at the Hub River Road for their accommodation. But the transporters seem to be unwilling to shift their business for one reason or the other.

The Lyari Town administration has been receiving complaints of congestion and road obstructions in traffic flow on main roads.

In view of this, the administration has decided to clear the mess and restore the pedestrians’ right of unobstructed movement and vacate the main roads from unauthorized and illegal occupation.

However, for public convenience, these buses and coaches would be allowed to pick up passengers from the spots in Lyari Town (to be designated).

This will be a maximum 15-minutes’ stop and during this period no loading and unloading will be allowed.

The administration made it clear that no business of loading and unloading by the goods transporters would be allowed within the jurisdiction of Lyari Town as the defunct KMC had already shifted this business to Hawkesbay Trucks Stand by providing the transporters alternative plots on cheap rates.

The administration had initiated a campaign from May 15 for clearance of main roads, especially the busiest Sheedi Village Road, Lea Market to Aat Chowk, where the goods transporters and Balochistan-bound buses had unauthorisedly blocked the road and created a public nuisance.
