HYDERABAD, May 22: The Irsa University Hospital organized a seminar on the “Danger of Kidney Infection” here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the seminar, Dr Abdul Rasheed Shaikh, kidney specialist and assistant professor at the university hospital, said it was necessary for people to protect themselves against frequent kidney infection.

He cautioned that drinking less water, not to urinate fully and to hold back the passing of urine for a longer period could cause infection and other kidney diseases.

Dr Shaikh warned that if this was allowed to happen frequently, there was a great risk of kidney failure.

He disclosed that at least 50 per cent of the women throughout the world experienced kidney infection at least once in their lifetime while 50 per cent of these women suffer from this ailment frequently.

He said late circumcision of male children could also cause kidney infection and added that Vesico Ureter Reflux (VUR) was a big cause of kidney infection among children.

He explained that in this disease, half of the urine goes back in the kidneys which he said could also cause kidney failure.

He said the diabetic patients also had more kidney infections.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Dr Aftab A. Muneer, head of the department of gynaecology and obstetrics, said expectant mothers were susceptible to kidney infection and advised them to check their urine at least three times during pregnancy.
