KARACHI, May 21: The medical superintendent of the Spencer Eye Hospital has denied that any doctor is involved in charging for inter-ocular lenses from any patient.

He refuted the statement of the executive district officer, Dr Ali Nawaz Shaikh, reported by Dawn in the May 21 issue, in which the EDO had said that he had received complaints that doctors at the Spencer Eye Hospital were taking money from patients.

In a statement, the medical superintendent said the government did not provide the inter-ocular lens kit. “A patient has to arrange inter-ocular lenses himself in and around the hospital, but due to some complaints from the patients regarding overcharging of inter-ocular lenses a meeting was held in the office of the EDO, health, and on the decision of the meeting use of standard brands of inter-ocular lenses on prescription was circulated.”

He added that it was not the decision at the hospital administration level.
