GUJRANWALA, May 8: Chief of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Maulana Fazlur Rahman said on Wednesday that his party would observe protest day on Friday against the US troops’ operation in the tribal areas.

Protest processions would be taken out from all district headquarters with the support of other religious parties, he said while speaking at a press conference at the Sheranwala Bagh Jamia Masjid here.

The Maulana said that the government had been claiming that only logistics support was being extended to the coalition forces. “Actually the government is supporting the US-led forces to eliminate Islamic culture.”

He said that the rulers have no right to change the constitution. He urged the Supreme Court to play its role to save the constitution.

“Only parliament is empowered to amend the constitution,” he said.

He was of the view after the referendum President Musharraf’s popularity has declined.

He said that a crucial meeting of the Majlis-i-Amal would be held in Islamabad on May 13 to discuss the political situation.

COPS PUNISHED: The DIG ordered on Wednesday action against three inspectors on charges of negligence of duty and corruption.

Former SHO of Pindi Bhattian police station inspector Farooq Ahmad was suspended from service, former SHO of Tanda Gujrat police station Inspector Muhammad Qasim was demoted as sub-inspector while two years service of former SHO of Venaki Tarar Inspector Ali Asghar was forfeited for failure to control crime.

The DIG also transferred former SHO of Saddar Kamoki police station Inspector Muhammad Islam, SI Malik Muhammad Nawaz and other staff to the police lines and issued show cause notice them.

He also dismissed from service a clerk of Mandi Bahauddin SP’s office, Muhammad Ashraf, because of absence.

CONDEMNED: The Gujranwala District Bar Association and other social welfare, political and religious organizations have strongly condemned the acts of terrorism in Karachi and Lahore.
