KARACHI, May 7: Karachiites passed sleepless night between Monday and Tuesday in this hot and humid weather as the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation resorted to unannounced loadshedding in various localities.

People in various localities complained about prolonged power failures, especially during the night.

However, KESC officials said there was no major breakdown. Some individual complaints were received about power failures which were entertained accordingly, they added.

Residents in various areas said power supply to their areas was disconnected for more than two hours during night. Moreover, in the day time, there were frequent breakdowns.

Students appearing in their intermediate examinations complained that they suffered on account of power failure as they could not continue their studies during night due to frequent power failures in the areas.

A student in Gulistan-i-Jauhar (Block-17) said power failure for more than two hours during night disturbed his studies at a time when his exams were in progress.

A resident of Federal B. Area, Block-20, said his locality plunged into darkness around 4am and people remained awake due to hot and humid weather.

Similar complaints were received from Blocks 6 and 17, Federal B. Area, North Nazimabad Blocks L and H.

A woman in Shadman Town, Sector 14-B, North Karachi complained about power failure in her locality since 7:00pm. She said that power supply was not restored till late in the night. She also complained that electricity in her locality remained disconnected twice in the night for more than two hours. She said her ailing husband was in trouble because of power failures.

Another consumer, dejected by the KESC’s performance, in North Karachi near Nagan Chowrangi said the power supply was repeatedly switched off and on in night and day as well.

He said that the KESC had increased charges manifold, but the company had miserably failed to remove ‘Kundas’ in various areas.

The kundas in his areas were being patronised by officials of the power company.

It is criminal negligence on the part of the KESC and those responsible for consuming electricity by Kundas be punished and the amount of leakages recovered from their salaries and dues.”

A resident in Block-14 Federal B Area said the power supply was disconnected in the evening on Tuesday around 5:10pm and restored after two hours.

“The KESC resorts to unannounced loadshedding to disturb the people and it may be an attempt to sabotage peace in the city.”
