KARACHI: SPLA observes protest day

KARACHI, May 6: On the appeal of Sindh Professors and Lecturers’ Association (SPLA), more than 7,000 college teachers in the province observed a black day on Monday in protest against reported misbehaviour of police, Nazims and councillors with the on-duty teachers on the occasion of presidential referendum, a press release said.

They boycotted teaching and non-teaching activities, but attended their examination duties. Protest meetings were held in many colleges in which they criticized SHO Taimuria police station M. Tahir, and ASI Liaquat Hussain for torturing Prof Shahid Ahmad of the Government Premier College, Karachi.

The teachers also criticized the reported intervention by Nazim Union Council, Lines Area, Masroor Ahmad, and councillor Guddo who also misbehaved with the presiding officer in exercise of his election duty.

The press release said the SPLA also criticized the action of district officer (colleges), Prof Mujeeb Feroze, for forcibly calling the teachers to attend President Pervez Musharraf’s public meeting on April 28 in the city.—PPI
