GUJRANWALA, May 2: City tehsil council employees resumed their token strike on Thursday against manhandling of a storekeeper by the city tehsil Naib Nazim and his men.

At a meeting held here, union leaders Dr Shafiq, Wahid Iqbal and Khwaja Amjad Rathore said city tehsil council employees had deferred their strike till referendum on the appeal of former mayor Aslam Butt.

They said storekeeper Abdul Majid and eyewitnesses recorded their statements with an inquiry committee headed by Aslam Butt and confirmed that city Naib Nazim Ehsanullah Chaudhry and his men had manhandled and humiliated the storekeeper over a minor issue.

They demanded early arrest of the Naib Nazim and his men.

FOUR KILLED: Four people, including an elderly woman, were killed while over two dozen others were injured in separate road accidents in and around the city on Thursday.

Elderly Sharifan Bibi, a resident of Lohianwala village, was crossing the Rawalpindi Bypass Chowk when a speeding bus crushed her. She died on the spot.

Police arrested bus driver Yousaf.

A man was killed and his son injured in a collision between a motorcycle and a tractor-trolley on the GT Road, Wazirabad.

Fakhar Mahmood and his son, Faisal, were going to Sodara from Wazirabad by a motorcycle when a tractor-trolley hit them. Mahmood died on the spot, while Faisal sustained injuries. The injured was rushed to the THQ civil hospital, Wazirabad.

Nasim Abbas was crushed by a wagon on Alipur Chattha Road.

A bus overturned on Hafizabad Road after crushing a passerby, Aslam. Two dozen bus passengers were also injured in the accident.

WHEAT PROCUREMENT: The government will purchase wheat from defaulters of the Agricultural Development Bank at subsidized price to recover loans, it is learnt.

A directive has been issued to Passco and the food department to purchase wheat from these defaulters on a priority basis.

Sources said the farmers who had failed to return their loans had offered the government to purchase their produce for the recovery of loans.

The ADB has provided the lists of defaulters to Passco and the food department.

Meanwhile, the area farmers and wheat growers have expressed concern over purchasing of wheat at low price by commission agents of grain markets, and demanded that their produce should be purchased by Passco or the food department at subsidized price.

They said the commission agents and millowners were purchasing wheat from them for Rs250 to Rs260 per 40kg instead of Rs300.

SHOT DEAD: A man was shot dead allegedly by his rival over a marriage issue in Behram, Wazirabad, on Thursday.

Rashed was present in his house when Shahid Latif called him out and opened fire on him. Rashed died on the spot.
