I APPRECIATE Justice Sajjad Ali Shah’s illuminating column ‘Referendum — the legal aspect’ (Dawn, April 11). The retired chief justice of the apex court has rightly pointed out that election means that there should be several candidates, and electors should have a choice.
This constitutional method must be accepted and not deviated from on any pretext. Any deviation would amount to fraud not only with the people but also with the Constitution which is to be interpreted for the benefit of the people and not an individual.
Experience shows that all military dictators in the past deliberately defrauded the Constitution and the people. Since the people do not raise their voice collectively against this serious violation of the Constitution, we are in the process of facing yet another fraud.
