KARACHI: PPP appeals to EC to stop referendum

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 23: Pakistan People’s Party has appealed to the Election Commission to take suo motu action and stop the government from holding presidential referendum in the larger interest of the country, the nation and sensitive institutions.

PPP Sindh leaders Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, Rashid Hussain Rabbani, Munawwar Hussain Suhrawardi, Qazi Asad Abid, Muzaffar Shujra, Pir Aftab Shah Jilani, Manzoor Wasan and Aga Siraj Durrani, in a statement, said the nontransparent procedure adopted by the government for the unconstitutional step and the way national resources and the government machinery had been used for the purpose was harming the image of the armed forces.

Reminding Chief Election Commissioner Justice Irshad Hasan Khan that as the Supreme Court chief justice he had justified the army operation under the law of necessity, they expressed their belief that he would stop Gen Pervez Musharraf from becoming “Amirul Mominin” like Gen Ziaul Haque. This act, they said, would add a new chapter in the history of the country.
