HARIPUR, April 21: Seven people, including five policemen and a young girl, were injured when a cousin of former federal minister Gohar Ayub Khan hurled hand-grenades at them, here in the small hours of Sunday.

Police said there was an old dispute over the share of family property between Ahmad Khan and his elder brother Fakhar Zaman, sons of the late Akram Khan, the younger brother of Field Marshal Ayub Khan.

On Saturday night, when Ahmad Khan, who had been to jail several times in different cases, failed to persuade his elder brother Fakhar Zaman for equal distribution of the inherited property, he got infuriated and lobbed a hand-grenade at the house of his elder brother, resulting in injuries to Fakhar and his daughter.

When police was called the accused threw another hand-grenade at them, injuring five cops who tried to arrest the accused.

After some time, the accused was overpowered by a larger contingent of police.

Following which he wounded himself by banging his head against a wall.

All the injured were shifted to Ayub Medical Complex, Abbottabad, where the condition of one policeman, Mehboob Khan, was reported to be precarious.

Six other injured were stated to be out of danger. The five constables injured in the attack are: Mehboob Khan, Jehanzeb, Ajmal Khan, Zaheer Shah and Juma Khan.

The police have registered a case against the accused under sections 324, 3/4 of the Explosive Act and investigation is in progress.
